Disaster Pet Preparedness

Did you know that more than half of the households in the United States have pets? And that during times of disaster people will risk their lives to save their furry friends? Are you and your pets prepared?

On May 8th, National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, FEMA encourages pet owners to prepare their pets. After Hurricane Katrina, many pet owners learned the hard way that evacuation buses and most emergency shelters are unable to accommodate animals. Animals left behind can become a risk for emergency responders and be at risk themselves of health complications and getting lost, injured or killed. Family preparedness plans need to account for the animal members of the household.

Create a pet evacuation kit that includes vet records, medications, identification information, bowls, water, food, and comforting items. Not all shelters allow pets so it is important to identify where your family can go and how you will get there. For more information on your kit, visit www.ready.gov.

Waggy Hour at The Bulldog

On May 12th, from 6pm to 8pm, please join APAWS at The Bulldog bar in the Southdowns BulldogBulldog Shopping Center. The Bulldog invites all leashed dogs (along with their humans) to enjoy the dog-friendly patio and great social atmosphere. This laid-back event will include happy hour specials and raffles. Come take advantage of the beer, the food, and a beautiful spring evening at this fun location. See you there!

Event Notification List

Would you like reminders about upcoming APAWS events? We have created a separate email list for event reminders. Reminders will be sent leading up to the event and the day of the event. Please consider joining the event email list.

Are you looking for a special way to memorialize a loved one or honor? Are you looking for a unique gift for the pet lover in your life? Please consider making a donation in their name. Our volunteers are happy to send a tax deduction receipt to you and a personalized card to the person of your choice. Their name will also be displayed on our website and in our newsletter.
